Mobile Mapping System: case study of the Messina-Palermo motorway layout
2009
This paper presents the first results of the MMS (Mobile Mapping System) survey on the geometry of the A20 italian motorway Messina-Palermo. The layout parameters are the essential data for an effective management of a single or a road network. In particular these parameters are essential for applying the Design Consistency methodology to proposed or existing road infrastructures; through this methodology the road manager can make sure that the road characteristics are adjusted to the driving behaviour of motorists by analysing the relationship between horizontal and vertical alignment and the design and operating speed. Both the difficult finding of the road design schemes, particularly in…
Walking tourism in Malaga: a pilot survey to explore tourism behaviours with a GPS approach
2018
Walking tourism in urban destinations can be defined as a sequence of day visits and/or a sequence of walking tours. In this work, GPS tracking data on spatio-temporal behaviour of walking tourists in Malaga are reported as case study. Malaga is a booming tourist destination characterized by a city centre, particularly suitable for a pedestrian visit. From 22nd January to 19th March 2018 for a total period of 41 days, a survey was carried out with a specific protocol: 103 interviews were conducted and 101 GPS valid tracks were collected. Walking tourists were systematically sampled, starting from the population of all tourists staying in the surveying day at some selected hotels in the city…
Barrier crossings and winds shape daily travel schedules and speeds of a flight generalist
2021
External factors such as geography and weather strongly affect bird migration influencing daily travel schedules and flight speeds. For strictly thermal-soaring migrants, weather explains most seasonal and regional differences in speed. Flight generalists, which alternate between soaring and flapping flight, are expected to be less dependent on weather, and daily travel schedules are likely to be strongly influenced by geography and internal factors such as sex. We GPS-tracked the migration of 70 lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) to estimate the relative importance of external factors (wind, geography), internal factors (sex) and season, and the extent to which they explain variation in trav…
Radiometric and geometric evaluation of the capabilities of the new airborne digital photogrammetric sensors
2008
In this paper the theoretic and practical points of view about the applications of the modern digital airborne sensors in the photogrammetry and remote sensing fields are described. The first part of the paper describes the theoretic matter, the second one shows the first results regarding the carried out elaborations on an image of Palermo acquired by digital airborne sensor LH System ADS40. Besides the research has examined most of sides regarding the trilinear sensor and it has highlighted the capabilities and limitations respect to the traditional analogical system and the matricial CCD sensor.

Precision Agriculture: Past, Present and Future
2011
From 1978 the Global Positioning System, needed for sensing the position of military targets (e.g. buildings, machinery), was developed as a pure military system, while in 1983 it was made available also for public use. Therefore, at the beginning of 80s precision agriculture, requiring GPS for sensing the position to which any measured field parameter must be geo-referenced, was implemented for the first time in US. In fact, soil and crop parameters are spatially variable in a field, so that spatially uniform rate crop input applications cause increased environmental impact and crop input waste. In order to reduce the environmental impact and optimise the use of crop inputs, precision agri…
Valutazione di sistemi GPS e DGPS combinati con metodi di correzione e sistemi non satellitari
2000
The aim of this work is assess the accuracy of three positiotining systems: a hand-held GPS receiver, tested on itself and together with a pseudo-differential method; a DGPS system; a dead reckoning system. Test results suggest that, for row crops, the "corrected" GPS, the DGPS and the dead reckoning systems satisfy the accuracy requirement for mapping in post-processing soil and crop parameters. It is possible to improve the reliability of position resolution, by using a combined DGPS-dead reckoning system that overcomes the problems of signal weakening and obstruction.
RFI: a case study of the University of Palermo
2010
The work shows the results of testing conducted from last years with the GNNS CORS of University of Palermo, in term of radio frequency interference, by a team composed of researchers of Dipartimento di Rappresentazione (DIRAP), Faculty of Engineering of Palermo and to the Laboratory of Physics of the Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione dell’Ambiente (ARPA) of the Sicilian Region. The CORS is first installed inside a scientific network with 9 permanent station located in western Sicily with distance between 22 and 80 kilometres and carry out for real time positioning experience. The main goal of the work is to verify the radio frequency interference which has been subjected CORS in last yea…
STUDIO METODOLOGICO PER LA REALIZZAZIONE DI UNA RETE DI MONITORAGGIO FRANE IN AREE URBANIZZATE: IL CASO DI POGGIOREALE
2007
The goal of this work is to illustrate a methodology aimed at planning a monitoring network in urban areas affected by hydrogeological instability phenomena. The monitoring network will provide a continuous collection of data and their transmission through a Global Position System (GPS) to a central collecting and processing office. The monitoring of an area prone to high landslide risk, as could be any urban area (the town of Poggioreale in our study case), should take into consideration the collection of data relevant both for the knowledge of the landslide features as well as for the planning of reclamation action. At the same time it would also seem opportune to collect data relating to…
